| Generic Name : | Lithium carbonate |
| Drug description : | 250mg tablet marked CAMCOLIT; 400 mg controlled- release tablet marked S and CAMCOLIT. Both white f-c scored tablets. |
| Presentation : | Lithium carbonate 250mg (equivalent to 6.8 mmol Li +) or 400mg (equivalent to 10.8 mmol Li +). |
| Indications : | Treatment and prophylaxis of mania, manic-depressive illness and recurrent depression. Treatment of aggressive and self- mutilating behaviour. |
| Adult Dosage : | Treatment, maintain serum lithium levels in range 0.6 - 1.0 mmol/L. Prophylaxis, maintain serum lithium levels in range 0.4 - 0.8 mmol/L. See data sheet. |
| Child Dosage : | Not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Addison's disease. Renal or cardiac disease. Lactation. |
| Special Precautions : | Pregnancy. Initiate treatment in hospital following assessment of renal, thyroid and cardiac function and urinalysis. Maintain adequate salt and fluid intake. Monitor thyroid function. Advise patients to report symptoms of intoxication. |
| Interactions : | Diuretics, NSAIDs, carbamazepine, flupentixol (flupenthixol), methyldopa, phenytoin, haloperidol, metoclopramide, tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants, tetracyclines. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Nausea, diarrhoea, tremor, muscle weakness. CNS and ECG disturbances. Weight gain, oedema, hypo/hyperthyroidism. Polyuria, polydipsia, skin |
