Drug details for : Baclofen
 
Drug class description :  Muscle relaxants (GABA derivatives).
Generic Name :  Generic Dose should be increased gradually to avoid sedation and hypotonia.
Drug description :  Tablets.
Presentation :  Tablets, baclofen 10 mg . Available from APS, Ashbourne (BaclospasR ), Berk (BalgifenR ), Co-Pharma, Cox, Generics UK, Hillcross, Lagap, Norton, Sovereign.
Indications :  Voluntary muscle spasticity due to cerebrovascular accidents, cerebral palsy, meningitis, multiple sclerosis, spinal lesions, head injury. For injection see Lioresal Intrathecal: Severe chronic spasticity associated with spinal injury or multiple sclerosis in patients intolerant or unresponsive to oral therapy.
Adult Dosage :  Initially, 5 mg three times daily, increasing as required by 5 mg three times daily at three day intervals; maximum 100 mg daily. Intrathecal injection requires test dose, titration steps and maintenance dose calculations. See Data Sheet.
Contra Indications :  Peptic ulceration.
Special Precautions :  Epilepsy, psychotic or convusional states, cerebrovascular accident., sphincter hypertonia, autonomic dysreflexia, history of peptic ulcer, respiratory, hepatic or renal impairment. Elderly. Pregnancy, lactation. Withdraw drug gradually over at least 1 - 2 weeks. Perform tests in liver disease or diabetes. For intrathecal injection: pre- operative assessment mandatory, abnormal CSF flow.
Interactions :  Antihypertensives, lithium, fentanyl, morphine, tricyclic antidepressants, ibuprofen, levodopa, carbidopa, alcohol, CNS depressants.
Adverse Reactions :  Nausea, sedation, dry mouth, hypotension, respiratory or cardiovascular depression, dysuria, frequency of micturition. Rarely visual disturbances, rash, deterioration in liver function tests, neurological and psychiatric symptoms.
