| Drug description : | 40 mg: green scored tablets marked EVANS/BC4. 80 mg pink scored tablets marked EVANS/BC8. 200 mg white scored tablets marked EVANS/BC20. |
| Presentation : | Tablets, sotalol hydrochloride 40mg , 80mg , 200mg . |
| Indications : | Treatment and prophylaxis of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias except torsade de pointes. |
| Adult Dosage : | Initially 80 mg daily either singly or as two divided doses. Titrate at 2 - 3 day intervals, to usual dose 160 - 320 mg daily in two divided doses. |
| Child Dosage : | Not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, severe peripheral arterial disease, uncompensated cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, hypotension, right ventricular failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension, significant cardiomegaly, untreated phaeochromocytoma. Generally contraindicated in patients with history of bronchospasm. |
| Special Precautions : | Poor cardiac reserve should be controlled with digitalis and diuretics. Diabetes; metabolic acidosis. Asthenic symptoms. Cerebrovascular insufficiency. Atopy. Renal or hepatic impairment, thyrotoxic crisis. General anaesthesia; consider withdrawal before elective surgery. Pregnancy, lactation. Withdraw gradually. |
| Interactions : | Clonidine withdrawal, verapamil, diltiazem, class II calcium antagonists, class I antiarrhythmics, cardiac depressant anaesthetics, hypoglycaemics, reserpine, other antihypertensives, ergot alkaloids, cimetidine, rifampicin, theophylline, warfarin, CNS depressants, sympathomimetics, indometacin (indomethacin). |
| Adverse Reactions : | Cold extremities, sleep disturbances (particularly with the more lipophilic drugs), bradycardia, exertional tiredness, bronchospasm, heart failure, hypotension, GI upset. If unexplained dry eyes or skin rash occur withdraw gradually. |
