| Generic Name : | Melphalan Glaxo Wellcome is discontinuing Alkeran 5mg tablets when existing stocks are exhausted. This is estimated to occur by the summer of 2001. |
| Drug description : | Alkeran tablets: 2mg white tablet coded A2A. 5 mg white tablet coded B2A. Both marked WELLCOME. Alkeran Injection: powder in ampoule plus diluent. |
| Presentation : | Alkeran Tablets: Melphalan 2 mg , 5mg . Alkeran Powder for Injection: Melphalan 50 mg . |
| Indications : | Alkeran Tablets: Indicated in the treatment of multiple myeloma and advanced ovarian adenocarcinoma. May also be used in the treatment of breast carcinoma (alone or in combination with other drugs or as adjuvant to surgery), polycythaemia rubra vera. Alkeran Injection: Indicated in the treatment of localised malignant melanoma of the extremities and localised soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities (administered by regional arterial perfusion). May also be used (alone or in conjunction with other drugs) to treat multiple myeloma, ovarian cancer, neuroblastoma in childhood. See Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Adult Dosage : | Note: Alkeran should be prescribed only by physicians experienced in the management of malignant disease with alkylating agents. Dosage varies according to condition being treated. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Elderly Dosage : | Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Contra Indications : | Previous hypersensitivity to melphalan. Lactation. |
| Special Precautions : | Note: Alkeran is an active cyctotoxic agent for use under the direction of physicians experienced in the administration of such agents. Alkeran injection - avoid extravasation as soft tissue damage may occur. High dose injection should only be administered at specialist centres. Monitor blood counts. Renal impairment. Pregnancy. See Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Interactions : | Nalidixic acid, cyclosporin. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Bone marrow depression, GI effects, stomatitis, allergic reactions. Maculopaupular rashes, pruritus reported occasionally. See Summary of Product Characteristics. |
