| Drug class description : | Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. |
| Generic Name : | Brinzolamide |
| Drug description : | Eye drops, suspension. |
| Presentation : | Eye drops, brinzolamide 10mg/mL. |
| Indications : | To decrease elevated intraocular pressure in ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. As monotherapy in patients unresponsive to beta-blockers or patients in whom beta-blockers are contraindicated, or as adjunctive therapy to beta- blockers. |
| Adult Dosage : | One drop into affected eye(s) twice daily; increased to one drop three times daily if required. Nasolacrimal occlusion or gently closing the eyelid after installation is recommended. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 18 years, not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Hypersensitivity to brinzolamide or any of the excipients. Known hypersensitivity to sulphonamides. Severe renal impairment. Hyperchloraemic acidosis. Lactation - strongly recommended to avoid use of Azopt. Azopt. |
| Special Precautions : | If signs of hypersensitivity occur, discontinue use. Use with oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors is not recommended. Pseudoexfoliative or pigmentary glaucoma. Narrow-angle glaucoma. Compromised cornea. Contact lenses. Diabetes mellitus. Dry eyes. Pregnancy. |
| Interactions : | CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clotrimazole, ritonavir) - caution advised if used concomitantly with Azopt. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Taste perversion, temporary blurred vision on installation. Also, ocular discomfort, foreign body sensation, ocular hyperaemia. Uncommonly, dry eye, ocular pain, ocular discharge, ocular pruritus, keratitis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, lid margin crusting, sticky sensation, tearing, eye fatigue, keratopathy, conjunctival follicles and abnormal vision. Some systemic effects, eg, headache. See Summary of Product Characteristics. |
