Drug details for : Aminophylline
 
Drug class description :  Xanthines (bronchodilators).
Generic Name :  Generic Aminophylline is a theophylline compound in combination with ethylenediamine. Theophylline has a narrow therapeutic window, to avoid toxicity and achieve optimum response a plasma theophylline level of 10 - 20mg/litre or 55-110 micromol/litre sho
Drug description :  Tablets/ampoules.
Presentation :  Tablets, aminophylline 100 mg . Available from Norton, Regent. Tablets, SR, aminophylline 225mg . Available from Ashbourne (Amnivent 225-SRR ), Norton (Norphyllin R ). Injection, aminophylline 25 mg / mL (POM). Available from Phoenix.
Indications :  Bronchospasm associated with asthma, COPD and chronic bronchitis.
Adult Dosage :  Orally, 100-300 mg, three to four Orally, 100-300 mg, three to four times daily, after food. Deteriorating acute severe asthma not previously treated with theophylline, by slow intravenous injection over 20 minutes, 250 - 500 mg (5 mg/kg), then as for acute severe asthma. Acute severe asthma, by intravenous infusion, 500 micrograms/kg/hour, adjusted according to plasma-theophylline concentration. Note: Patients taking oral theophylline or aminophylline should not normally receive intravenous aminophylline unless plasma-theophylline concentration is available to guide dosage.
Child Dosage :  Deteriorating acute severe asthma not previously treated with theophylline, 5 mg/kg, then as for acute severe asthma. Acute severe asthma, six months to nine years, 1 mg/kg/hour; 10- 16 years, 800 micrograms/kg/hour, adjusted according to plasma- theophylline concentration.
Contra Indications :  Sensitivity to theophylline or ethylene diamine. Acute porphyria. Concomitant administration with ephedrine in children.
Special Precautions :  Cardiac, liver or thyroid disease. Peptic ulceration. Pregnancy, lactation.
Interactions :  Cimetidine, nizatidine. Antibiotics (including ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, troleandomycin), isoniazid, fluconazole, viloxazine, combined oral contraceptives, carbimazole, thiabendazole, mexiletine, propafenone, calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, verapamil, possibly others), allopurinol, 2 oxpentifylline, other xanthines, disulfiram, interferon alfa, influenza vaccine, anticonvulants including carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbitone and primidone, rifampicin, ritonavir, aminoglutethimide, sulfinpyrazone. b agonists, corticosteroids and diuretics, b- adrenocorticoids, glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, lithium, halothane. Fluvoxamine.
Adverse Reactions :  Nausea, gastric irritation, headache, CNS stimulation.
