| Drug description : | Akineton: white quarter scored tablet with Knoll logo. Akineton Injection: 5 mg per mL; ampoules. |
| Presentation : | Akineton: Biperiden hydrochloride 2 mg . Akineton Injection: Biperiden lactate 5mg . |
| Indications : | Drug-induced extrapyramidal Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms and all other types of parkinsonism. |
| Adult Dosage : | Akineton: Initially 1 mg twice daily gradually increasing to 2 mg three times daily, followed by further increase then gradual reduction. Akineton Injection: 2 .5 - 5 mg as a single dose to maximum of 20 mg daily by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection. |
| Child Dosage : | Not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Untreated narrow angle glaucoma, GI obstruction, tardive dyskinesias (except where associated with neuroleptic drugs or Parkinsonian symptoms). Lactation. |
| Special Precautions : | Convulsions, cardiac arrhythmias, recent MI, urinary obstruction. Pregnancy. Elderly. Withdraw gradually. |
| Interactions : | Other anticholinergic psychotropic and antiparkinsonian drugs, antihistamines, CNS depressants, quinidine, metoclopramide. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Anticholinergic effects, confusion, agitation, rash. |
