| Drug description : | Powder in vials. |
| Presentation : | Powder for injection, aztreonam 500 mg , 1 g, 2 g. |
| Indications : | Gram-negative infections of lower respiratory tract, including lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. Bone and joint, skin and soft tissue, intra- abdominal and gynaecological infections. Bacteraemia and septicaemia, meningitis caused by H. influenzae or N. menigitidis. UTI, pyelonephritis, cystitis, asymptomatic bacteriuria, gonorrhoea. |
| Adult Dosage : | 1 g eight hourly by intramuscular or intravenous injection, or 2 g twelve hourly intravenously. Severe infections, 2 g six to eight hourly intravenously; maximum 8 g daily. UTI, 0 .5 - 1 g eight to twelve hourly intramuscularly or intravenously. Gonorrhoea/cystitis, 1 g single dose intramuscularly. dose intramuscularly. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 1 week, not recommended; 1 week - 2 years, 30 mg/kg every six to eight hours. Severe infections over 2 years, 50 mg/kg every six to eight hours. Maximum 8 g daily. |
| Contra Indications : | Pregnancy. |
| Special Precautions : | Renal or hepatic dysfunction. Penicillin or cephalosporin sensitivity. Lactation. |
| Interactions : | Anticoagulants. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Skin rashes, diarrhoea, vomiting. Local reactions at inj. site. Haematological and hepatobiliary reactions (rare). |
