Drug details for : AMIKIN
 
Drug class description :  Aminoglycosides.
Generic Name :  Amikacin
Drug description :  Amikin: vials. Amikin Paediatric: vials.
Presentation :  Amikin: Amikacin (as sulphate) 500mg per 2mL. Amikin Paediatric: Amikacin (as sulphate) 100mg per 2mL.
Indications :  Short-term treatment of serious infections due to susceptible strains of Gram-negative bacteria. May also be indicated for the treatment of known or suspected staphylococcal disease. Active against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative organisms, including Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia coli, indole- positive and indole-negative Proteus spp., Klebsiella- Enterobacter-Serratia spp, Salmonella, Shigella, Minea- Herellae, Citrobacter freundii and Providencia spp.
Adult Dosage :  Amikin: 15 mg/kg intramuscular or intravenous injection daily in two divided doses for up to two divided doses for up to 10 days; total maximum 15 g. UTI, 7 .5 mg/kg daily in two divided doses.
Child Dosage :  Amikin Paediatric: Neonates, initially 10 mg/kg then 15 mg/kg daily in two divided doses; others, same as adult.
Contra Indications :  Pregnancy.
Special Precautions :  Ensure adequate hydration. Renal impairment.
Interactions :  Frusemide (furosemide), etacrynic acid (ethacrynic acid), anaesthetics, neuromuscular blocking drugs.
Adverse Reactions :  Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity.
