Drug class description :  Class I antiarrhythmics (anti- arrhythmics).
Generic Name :  Propafenone
Drug description :  150 mg white f-c tablet; 300 mg white scored f-c tablet.
Presentation :  Tablets, propafenone hydrochloride 150mg , 300mg .
Indications :  Prophylaxis and treatment of ventricular arrhythmias. Prophylaxis and treatment of and paroxysmal supraventricular tachyarrhythmias when standard therapy has failed or is contraindicated.
Adult Dosage :  Initially 150 mg three times daily, increase at minimum 3 day intervals to maintenance dose of 300 mg twice daily; maximum 300 mg three times daily.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  Uncontrolled congestive heart failure, cardiogenic shock (except arrhythmia induced), severe bradycardia, uncontrolled electrolyte disturbances, severe obstructive pulmonary disease, marked hypotension, myasthenia gravis, pregnancy, lactation. Unless adequately paced: sinus node dysfunction, atrial conduction defects, second degree or greater AV, bundle branch or distal block.
Special Precautions :  Therapy should be initiated under hospital supervision. Asthma, hepatic and renal impairment, cardiac failure, structural heart disease. Elderly, pacemaker patients.
Interactions :  Other class I antiarrhythmics or warfarin, cimetidine, propranolol, metoprolol, rifampicin, tricyclic and related anti-depressants, neuroleptics, cyclosporin, theophylline.
Adverse Reactions :  Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, bitter taste, constipation, diarrhoea, headache, fatigue. Allergic skin reactions, bradycardia, SA, AV or intraventricular blocks may occur. Proarrhythmic effects.
