Medicine information : Amiodarone
 
Drug class description :  Class III antiarrhythmics (anti- arrhythmics).
Generic Name :  Generic
Drug description :  Tablets.
Presentation :  Tablets, amiodarone 100mg , 200mg . Available from APS, Cox, Generics UK, Hillcross, Lagap, Norton, Sterwin.
Indications :  Tachyarrhythmias associated with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Atrial flutter and fibrillation where other drugs cannot be used. All types of paroxysmal tachyarrhythmias where other drugs cannot be used.
Adult Dosage :  200 mg three times daily for one week then 200 mg twice daily for one week. Maintain on minimum effective dose, usually 200 mg daily.
Contra Indications :  SA or AV block. Severe bradycardia. Shock. History of thyroid dysfunction. Lactation. IV: Also severe respiratory failure, circulatory collapse, severe arterial hypotension, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy (bolus i.v.).
Special Precautions :  Therapy must be initiated under hospital or specialist supervision. Monitor thyroid, pulmonary and liver function and eyes. Heart failure. Iodine sensitivity. Pregnancy.
Interactions :  Oral anticoagulants, digoxin, phenytoin, drugs which prolong QT interval, antiarrhythmics, erythromycin, co-trimoxazole, pentamidine, antipsychotics, lithium, TCADs, antihistamines, antimalarials, b-blockers, Ca++ antagonists, diuretics, corticosteroids, tetracosactide (tetracosactrin), amphotericin, anaesthesia, cyclosporin.
Adverse Reactions :  Photosensitivity, skin reactions, pulmonary toxicity, ophthalmic, hepatic, neurological, cardiac and thyroid effects.
