Medicine information : APROVEL
 
Drug class description :  Angiotensin II antagonists (angiotensin II receptor antagonists)
Generic Name :  Irbesartan
Drug description :  White to off-white oval tablets marked with heart symbol and 2771, 2772 or 2773.
Presentation :  Tablets, irbesartan 75 mg , 150 mg , 300 mg .
Indications :  Essential hypertension.
Adult Dosage :  Initially 150 mg once daily. Increase if necessary to 300 mg once daily or add other antihypertensive agents.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Elderly Dosage :  Over 75 years, consider starting dose of 75 mg once daily then titrate according to response.
Contra Indications :  Pregnancy, lactation. Hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
Special Precautions :  Correct volume and/or salt depletion before starting therapy. Renovascular hypertension. Renal impairment and kidney transplantation. Hyperkalaemia - adequate monitoring of serum potassium in Aortic and mitral valve stenosis, obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Primary aldosteronism. Heart failure; monitor serum potassium and creatinine levels.
Interactions :  K+-sparing diuretics, K+ supplements, lithium.
Adverse Reactions :  Headache, musculoskeletal pain, flushing. Rarely during postmarketing surveillance, hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria, angioedema). Very rarely, asthenia, diarrhoea, dizziness, dyspepsia, hyperkalaemia, myalgia, nausea and tachycardia.
