| Drug class description : | Central a-agonists (alpha- agonists, centrally-acting antihypertensives). |
| Generic Name : | Methyldopa |
| Drug description : | Yellow f-c tablets marked ALDOMET and coded MSD 135, MSD 401 or MSD 516, respectively. |
| Presentation : | Tablets, methyldopa 125 mg , 250 mg , 500 mg . |
| Indications : | All grades of hypertension. |
| Adult Dosage : | Initially 250 mg two or three times daily, adjust at two day intervals; maximum 3 g daily. |
| Child Dosage : | Initially 10 mg/kg body-weight daily in two to four divided doses. Adjust according to response; maximum 65 mg/kg or 3g daily, whichever is less. |
| Elderly Dosage : | Initially 125 mg twice daily. Increase gradually as required; maximum 2 g daily. |
| Contra Indications : | Active liver disease. Depression. Phaeochromocytoma. |
| Special Precautions : | Haemolytic anaemia. History of liver disorder. Monitor liver function and WBC before therapy and for first six to 12 weeks. Renal impairment. Anaesthesia. cerebrovascular disease. Pregnancy, lactation. |
| Interactions : | Tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, lithium, MAOIs, sympathomimetics. Other antihypertensives. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Sedation, headache, asthenia, depression, bradycardia, nasal congestion, dry mouth, GI upset, positive Coombs test, jaundice, haemolytic anaemia. |
