Medicine information : ALDOMET
 
Drug class description :  Central a-agonists (alpha- agonists, centrally-acting antihypertensives).
Generic Name :  Methyldopa
Drug description :  Yellow f-c tablets marked ALDOMET and coded MSD 135, MSD 401 or MSD 516, respectively.
Presentation :  Tablets, methyldopa 125 mg , 250 mg , 500 mg .
Indications :  All grades of hypertension.
Adult Dosage :  Initially 250 mg two or three times daily, adjust at two day intervals; maximum 3 g daily.
Child Dosage :  Initially 10 mg/kg body-weight daily in two to four divided doses. Adjust according to response; maximum 65 mg/kg or 3g daily, whichever is less.
Elderly Dosage :  Initially 125 mg twice daily. Increase gradually as required; maximum 2 g daily.
Contra Indications :  Active liver disease. Depression. Phaeochromocytoma.
Special Precautions :  Haemolytic anaemia. History of liver disorder. Monitor liver function and WBC before therapy and for first six to 12 weeks. Renal impairment. Anaesthesia. cerebrovascular disease. Pregnancy, lactation.
Interactions :  Tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, lithium, MAOIs, sympathomimetics. Other antihypertensives.
Adverse Reactions :  Sedation, headache, asthenia, depression, bradycardia, nasal congestion, dry mouth, GI upset, positive Coombs test, jaundice, haemolytic anaemia.
