| Drug class description : | K+-sparing diuretics (potassium- sparing diuretics). |
| Generic Name : | Generic Amiloride directly acts on the distal renal tubule of the nephron to inhibit sodium/potassium ion exchange. |
| Drug description : | Tablets/oral solution. |
| Presentation : | Tablets, amiloride hydrochloride 5 mg . Available from APS, Cox, CP, Generics UK, Hillcross. Oral solution, sugar-free, amiloride hydrochloride 5mg/5mL . Available from Rosemont. |
| Indications : | Oedema. Conservation of potassium with thiazide and loop diuretics. |
| Adult Dosage : | 10 mg daily or 5mg twice daily. The dose adjusted to clinical response. In combination with other diuretics in heart failure or hypertension initially 5 - 10 mg daily; in cirrhosis with ascites initial dose 5mg daily. |
| Contra Indications : | Renal failure, hyperkalaemia, hypersensitivity to amiloride |
| Special Precautions : | Hyperkalaemia occurs more frequently in patients who are diabetic, geriatric or have some degree of renal disaese. Patients with hepatic insufficiency may develop hepatic encephalopathy. |
| Interactions : | Potassium sparing diuretic: Amiloride should not be used with other potassium sparing diuretics Increased risk of hyperkalaemia. ACE Inhibitors: Increased risk of hyperkalaemia. Potassium containg preparations: Increased risk of hyperkalaemia. NSAIDs: Risk of hyperkalaemia. Lithium: Risk lithium toxicity. Digoxin: Potential for alteration in digoxin clearance. Glucose tolerance test: Discontinue 3 days before test. |
| Adverse Reactions : | disturbance, dry mouth, rash, confused state, hypotension. |
