Risk Reduction

Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of contracting certain forms of meningitis, but cannot provide protection against all forms of the disease.

Good personal hygiene, such as hand-washing, can reduce the risk of contracting meningitis as it reduces the chances of transmitting the causal agents from person-to-person.  The risk can also be reduced by avoiding certain predisposing factors (see section on risk factors) such as smoking or living in crowded, dusty or smoky conditions.
