Viral

There is no single vaccine that prevents against all forms of viral meningitis, although a vaccine is available that provides protection against the mumps virus.  Active immunisation with the live-attenuated mumps vaccine has greatly reduced the incidence of mumps and, consequently, meningitis caused by mumps.  Before the introduction of the mumps vaccine the mumps virus was the most common cause of meningitis in children.
