Treatment

Immediate treatment with antibiotics is essential for any patient with a suspected case of meningitis and / or septicaemia because bacterial meningitis is potentially fatal and should be regarded as a medical emergency.

All patients with suspected meningitis should be admitted to hospital for diagnosis and case management.  A lumbar puncture should be performed and antibiotic treatment given immediately.  Delaying antibiotic administration significantly increases the risk of morbidity and mortality in patients with bacterial meningitis.
