Diagnosing

Lumbar puncture and removal of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is necessary to determine the causative agent of meningitis.  Laboratory tests routinely carried out on CSF include:

  • White blood cell (WBC) count
  • Protein concentration
  • Glucose concentration
  • Gram stain
  • Bacterial culture.
