Pneumococcal Meningitis

In Europe the majority of cases of pneumococcal meningitis (66%) occur in adults over 24 years of age.1 Most of the remaining cases (22%) occur in children less than 5 years of age. The prevalence of pneumococcal disease varies according to the season, with the highest disease burden occurring in winter. Nasopharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae is more common in young children than adults, and varies by geographical region.
