Types/Causes

Meningitis is usually caused by bacteria or viruses but may also be caused by fungi and amoebae.  The severity of the disease is dependent on the causal agent; for example, bacterial meningitis is extremely dangerous with high fatality rates, whereas viral meningitis is usually far less severe and rarely results in death.  The main causes of meningitis are described in the following sections:
