Candesartan is a member of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist group of antihypertensives. It is both potent and selective, and is administered as the prodrug, candesartan cilexetil, which is rapidly converted to the active form. Candesartan has a greater or equivalent efficacy to other antihypertensive agents including the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, calcium-channel blockers, thiazide diuretics and other angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Furthermore, candesartan has an overall incidence of adverse events that is similar to placebo, and also appears to be better tolerated than either ACE inhibitors or calcium-channel blockers.
