Men with type-2 diabetes at greater risk of cardiovascular death
06 Jan 2009
Males with type-2 diabetes are three to four times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than men without the condition, a new report has revealed.
The study, which is published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, also showed that men who had suffered from a heart attack or stroke were equally as likely to die from a cardiovascular problem.
According to report author Dr Gilles Dagenais: "Men with type-2 diabetes and no previous cardiovascular disease had a three-fold cardiovascular mortality risk compared with men with neither cardiovascular disease nor diabetes at the beginning of the follow-up."
Men who had been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes within the last five years were at a lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular condition than men who had suffered a heart attack or stroke, although this risk evened out between the groups in the long term.
The findings represent a serious men's health issue and outline the need for effective prevention of diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
Scientists in Finland last month discovered disturbances in lipid and amino acid metabolism in children who later developed type-1 diabetes.
