The connection between genetics and the development of arthritic psoriasis is largely unclear, it has been suggested.
Following research that looked at the onset of the disease in monozygotic and dizygotic twins, it has been concluded that evidence has yet to present itself that proves the heritability of psoriatic arthritis.
Studies by Odense University Hospital in Denmark, which looked at 36 pairs of twins, did find a genetic component with links to psoriatic skin disease, but found joint problems to be less prominent.
Dr Ole Birger Pedersen, one of the physicians behind the study, told Reuters Health the links between genetics and psoriasis were clear, but added the arthritic elements of the disease required further research.
"The search for psoriasis arthritis causation should both be directed towards identification of candidate genes and factors in our surroundings," he said.
World Psoriasis Day, an annual event designed to raise awareness of the disease, takes place on October 29th and aims to offer "an international voice to the 125 million people with psoriasis [and] psoriatic arthritis".
