New research has suggested a stronger link between the development of tuberculosis (TB) and Type 2 diabetes.
A study conducted by the University of Texas' School of Public Health in the USA found sufferers of the condition had a higher risk of contracting TB as a result of their depleted immune system.
Dr Joseph B McCormick, regional dean of the school, said the link between Type 2 diabetes and TB constitutes "a major public health threat" - particularly in regions where the disease is already prevalent.
"In countries where a third of the population is infected with TB, this becomes a real issue," he added.
It was also noted that people with Type 2 diabetes took longer to respond to anti-TB treatment and patients suffering from both conditions were more likely to resist a wide range of treatments.
Researchers at the University of Missouri, USA announced recently that by dissecting coronary microvessels they hoped to develop new blood-vessel dysfunction treatments for Type 2 diabetes sufferers.
