IDF issues call to action on diabetes, OSA link
09 Jun 2008

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Task Force on Epidemiology and Prevention has highlighted the importance of the link between type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Recent research findings demonstrating the relation between type 2 diabetes and OSA were presented at the American Diabetes Association 68th Annual Scientific Sessions, inciting further study on the subject within the medical community.

Professor Paul Zimmet, co-chair of the IDF Task Force on Epidemiology and Prevention, said: "While type 2 diabetes is recognised as a serious global epidemic, the severe health consequences of untreated sleep apnea, especially in people with diabetes, are not."

Figures show that as many as 40 per cent of patients with OSA also suffer from diabetes.

According to experts, studies have indicated that the prevalence of cardiovascular disease increases in tandem with the progression of OSA, meaning that people with diabetes and/or OSA are at higher risk of cardiovascular problems.

Co-chair professor Sir George Alberti added that although the exact mechanisms associating OSA with diabetes are not yet fully understood, the significant consequences of both conditions require the attention of medical professionals and researchers worldwide.
