New findings suggest that sun exposure and vitamin D levels may be contributing factors to the development of type 1 diabetes in children.
Research conducted at the Moores Cancer Center at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) found that the populations of countries closer to the equator had lower incidences of type 1 diabetes than those living in regions exposed to less sunlight and ultraviolet B.
The new study follows a recent report investigating the association between vitamin D levels and major cancers.
Dr Cedric F Garland, professor of family and preventive medicine in the UCSD School of Medicine, said: "This is the first study, to our knowledge, to show that higher serum levels of vitamin D are associated with reduced incidence rates of type 1 diabetes worldwide."
He added: "This research suggests that childhood type 1 diabetes may be preventable with a modest intake of vitamin D3 (1000 IU/day) for children, ideally with five to ten minutes of sunlight around noontime, when good weather allows.
"Infants less than a year old should not be given more than 400 IU per day without consulting a doctor."
Studies have shown that the majority of children who develop type 1 diabetes have no family history of the disease.
