Researchers in Hong Kong have discovered a link between erectile dysfunction and heart problems.
In a study published in the May edition of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the scientists found that coronary problems could be predicted in men who had both type 2 diabetes and erectile dysfunction.
They examined 2,306 patients, 26.7 per cent of whom had erectile dysfunction at the start of the investigation.
The researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong found that coronary heart disease was more common in those with erectile dysfunction than those without.
Erectile dysfunction was said to be one of a number of factors which could be used to predict the likelihood of an incidence of heart disease including age, how long they had had diabetes and the use of antihypertensive agents and albuminuria.
The report concluded that "in type 2 diabetic men without clinically overt cardiovascular disease, the presence of erectile dysfunction predicts a new onset of coronary heart disease events".
It recommended that physicians look for signs of erectile dysfunction when examining patients who are already considered likely to inherit heart problems.
According to the Sexual Dysfunction Association, one in ten men in the UK has recurring problems with their erections during their lifetime.
