Atropine (Generic-premedication)

• Presentation
  Injection, atropine 400 mcg/mL , 600 mcg/mL , 800 mcg/mL , 1mg/mL , 1.25mg/mL .
• Description
  Ampoules.
• Indications
  Bradycardia after myocardial infarction or when caused by beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs. To prevent excessive bronchial secretion during the use of general anaesthesia.
• Adult Dosage
  

  Premedication, 300 - 600 micrograms by intravenous injection immediately before induction of anaesthesia or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection 30 minutes before induction. Bradycardia, incremental doses of 100 micrograms by subcutaneous or intravenous injection.

• Child Dosage
  Bradycardia: Not recommended. Premedication: Premature infants, up to 60 micrograms; Full term infants, up to 100 micrograms; 6  infants, up to 100 micrograms; 6 months - 1 year, up to 200 micrograms. By the subcutaneous or intramuscular route 30 minutes before induction of anaesthesia. Older children: 20 micrograms per kilogram body weight.
• Contra Indications
  Prostatic enlargement, use with caution to elderly men. Paralytic ileus and closed angle glaucoma. Use during lactation, not recommended.
• Special Precautions
  Fever, pyloric stenosis, ulcerative colitis, gastro- oesophageal reflex or cardiac insufficiency. Pregnancy.
• Interactions
  

  Drugs with anticholinergic actions such as amantadine, some antihistamines, butyrophenones, phenothiazines and tricyclic antidepressants. Metoclopramide.

• Adverse Drug Reactions
  

  Excitement, delirium, dilated pupils, rapid pulse, hot flushes, dry skin, dry mouth and thirst. These effects may be followed by arrhythmias, difficulty with micturition and constipation. Rarely, fever, confusional states and rashes may occur.
