Drug delivery system could benefit men with erectile dysfunction

21 Sep 2009 - Posted by the Editorial Team

Topical treatment of erectile dysfunction could be boosted by the use of an innovative drug delivery system.

This is according to researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, US, who discovered that nanoparticles encapsulating nitric oxide "shows promise" in the treatment of the condition.

The nanoparticles - each of which is smaller than a grain of pollen - are capable of carrying tiny amounts of medications and releasing them in a controlled and sustained way.

Scientists have successfully trialled this method on animals and hope to replicate the results in humans.

Commenting on the findings, study co-author Professor Joel Friedman said: "Most of the animals, nearly 90 per cent, showed a response to treatment with the nanoparticles."

While tens of millions of men around the world have benefited from erectile dysfunction medications, they can cause side effects including abnormal vision, headaches and an upset stomach.

According to erectiledysfunctionfacts.com, up to 50 million men in the US and Europe suffer from erectile dysfunction.
