Alzheimer's biomarker could help ensure treatment starts earlier
19 Jun 2009 - Posted by the Editorial Team
Research conducted at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Sweden, suggests it is possible to detect Alzheimer's disease earlier than previously thought.
A study which appears in the medical journal Lancet Neurology shows it is possible to spot a biomarker known as the CSF AD profile, which can be used as an indicator of Alzheimer's, in the cerebrospinal fluid before other tests can confirm an accurate diagnosis.
According to Kaj Blennow, a professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy, the discovery has important implications for Alzheimer's treatment.
"The earlier we can catch Alzheimer's disease, the more we can do for the patient," he commented.
"The disease is one that progresses slowly, and the pharmaceuticals that are currently available are only able to alleviate the symptoms."
Professor Blennow added that it is of vital importance that treatment is started before changes to the brain become too severe.
Statistics released by the National Institute of Aging show symptoms of Alzheimer's usually appear in patients after they have reached the age of 60.
