Viagra can exaggerate effects of heart-protective protein

06 Jan 2009 - Posted by the Editorial Team

Erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra, can exaggerate the effects of a heart-protective protein, new research has shown.

Findings from Johns Hopkins, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, explain how the drug could eventually be used to treat or prevent damage caused by chronic high blood pressure.

According to researchers, Viagra affects the protein RGS2, which has been identified as a link in the chain reactions that help to protect the heart from serious failure.

An experiment on mice with RGS2 showed that hypertrophy, or dangerous muscle expansion, was delayed. Mice engineered to lack RGS2 expanded in weight far more quickly.

Commenting on the experiment, which could have implications for men's health, study senior investigator David Kass said: "Sildenafil clearly prolongs the protective effects of RGS2 in mouse hearts."

Dr Kass added that RGS2 essentially "acts like a short-term reset mechanism in the heart".

Recent research published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology questioned whether Viagra was safe to use for people suffering from cirrhosis.
