Calcium-channel blockers (class III calcium antagonists).Generic Name
Diltiazem - hypertensionDrug Description
Hard gelatin capsules containing prolonged release diltiazem beads.Presentation
Capsules, diltiazem hydrochloride 120mg , 180mg , 240mg , 300mg .Indications
Treatment of mild to moderate hypertension.
Adult Dosage
180 - 300mg once daily. Doses of up to 360mg/day may be of benefit in some patients.Child Dosage
Not recommended.Elderly Dosage
Starting dose of 120mg daily is recommended. Dose should not be increased if the heart rate falls below 50bpm.Contra Indications
Marked bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, left ventricular failure with stasis or second or third degree AV block, except in the presence of a functioning pacemaker. Should not be given pacemaker. Should not be given with dantrolene infusion. Pregnancy and lactation.
Special Precautions
Reduced left ventricular function. Mild bradycardia, first degree AV block or prolonged PR interval.Interactions
Carbamazepine, cyclosporin, theophylline, digoxin. H - antagonists. Other 2 antihypertensives or cardiac depressants, dantrolene infusion.Adverse Reactions
Lower limb oedema, headache, flushing, asthenia/fatigue, palpitations, malaise, minor gastrointestinal disturbances, and skin rash. Rarely, symptomatic bradycardia, sino- atrial block, AV block. Skin rash (usually localised). Isolated cases of moderate, transient elevation of liver transaminases at start of treatment, clinical hepatitis.

New review of Cryoballoon Ablation treatment for Atrial Fibrillation Cardiology Page
A new research review comparing the efficacy and safety of cryoballoon ablation for Atrial Fibrillation finds that a single cryoballoon ablation procedure for paroxysmal AF results in high acute and medium-term efficacy rates, with lower success rates when used as stand-alone therapy for persistent AF. The rate of complications is relatively low and includes a 6.38% incidence of PNP, most of which is transient. The review also looks at results of the STOP-AF trial, which found that 70 percent of patients with Atrial Fibrillation who were treated with Medtronic's Arctic Fox cryoballoon ablation freezing technique are free of any heart rhythm irregularities one year out from having the procedure. New Drug Eluting Stents safer for PCI patients Cardiology Page
Results from the SCAAR Study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2011, showed that Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with "new generation" Drug Eluting Stents (DES), was associated with a 38% lower risk of clinically meaningful restenosis and a 50% lower risk of stent thrombosis compared to old generation DES. The SCAAR study evaluated the long-term outcome in all patients who underwent stent implantation with bare metal stents, "older generation" drug eluting stents, and "new generation" drug eluting stents in Sweden. Further studies are needed to discriminate which component of the new generation DES is involved in decreasing the incidence of stent thrombosis and restenosis.
EMA confirms risk benefit of Multaq Cardiology Page
EMA has confirmed a positive benefit-risk balance for Multaq (dronedarone) from Sanofi- Aventis for the treatment of a newly defined population of paroxysmal and persistent Atrial Fibrillation patients, following its review under the Article 20 procedure. A new indication for Multaq is: indicated for the maintenance of sinus rhythm after successful cardioversion in adult clinically stable patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation.
