Drug Class Description

Androgens.

Generic Name

Testosterone

Drug Description

Transdermal patches containing testosterone in an alcohol-based gel reservoir (active surface area 60cm2).

Presentation

Patches, testosterone 328mg providing approximately 5mg over 24 hours.

Indications

Indicated for testosterone replacement therapy in adult males where deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone has been demonstrated.

Adult Dosage

Apply one patch daily at the same time each day. Apply to the arm, back or upper buttocks. Do not apply to the scrotum. Each patch should be worn for approximately 24 hours and then replaced. The patch may be applied at any time but to more closely follow the normal pattern of serum testosterone it is best to apply it in the morning.

Child Dosage

Under 18 years, not recommended.

Contra Indications

Men with carcinoma of the breast or known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate. Known hypersensitivity to testosterone or any components of the patch, eg, alcohol. Virormone Transdermal Patch has not been evaluated in women and must not be used in women. Testosterone may be harmful to the fetus.

Special Precautions

Oedema with or without congestive heart failure may be a serious complication in patients suffering from cardiac, hepatic or renal disease. In addition to discontinuation of the drug, diuretic therapy may be required.

Gynaecomastia frequently develops and occasionally persists in patients being treated for hypogonadism. Elderly patients treated with androgens may be at an increased risk for the development of prostatic hyperplasia. Evaluate elderly and other at risk patients for presence of prostate cancer prior to initiation of therapy. Use with caution in cancer patients at risk of hypercalcaemia (and associated hypercalciuria) - monitor serum calcium levels. Diabetes.

Interactions

Oral anticoagulants, oxyphenbutazone.

Adverse Reactions

Application site reactions including transient itching, moderate or severe erythema, burning sensation. Systemic adverse effects including headache and increased libido, asthenia, acne, myalgia, nervousness, depression, CNS stimulation, rash and hirsutism.
