Ferrous fumarate

Drug Description

Fersamal: brown tablets marked FERSAMAL. Fersamal syrup: brown syrup.

Presentation

Fersamal: Ferrous fumarate 210mg (equivalent to 65mg Fe). Fersamal Syrup: Ferrous fumarate 140mg (equivalent to 45mg Fe) per 5mL.

Indications

Iron-deficiency states.

Adult Dosage

1 tablet three times daily or 10 mL twice daily.

Child Dosage

Premature infants, 0 .6 mL/kg daily; others, 2.5 - 5 mL twice daily.

Special Precautions

History of peptic ulcer.

Interactions

Tetracyclines, antacids, penicillamine.

Adverse Reactions

GI upset. Allergic reactions.
