Presentation

Mixture, ferrous sulphate 1.2 per cent and a suitable antoxidant in a suitable vehicle with an orange flavour (paediatric ferrous sulphate mixture). Extemporaneous preparations should be recently prepared according to the following formula: ferrous sulphate 60 mg, ascorbic acid 10 mg, orange syrup 0.5 mL, double- strength chloroform water 2.5 mL, water to 5 mL. Alternatively a pre-prepared ferrous sulphate oral solution, paediatric BP is available from Martindale (special order). Martindale (special order).

Indications

Iron deficiency anaemias.

Child Dosage

Treatment, up to one year, 5 mL three times daily; one to five years, 10 mL three times daily; six to 12 years, 15 mL three times daily or 25 mL twice daily. To be taken well diluted with water.

Interactions

Tetracyclines.

Adverse Reactions

Gastrointestinal irritation, constipation, diarrhoea.
