En tratamientos prolongados realizar recuentos periódicos de células sanguíneas. Ante la aparición de erupciones cutáneas o disminución en el número de leucocitos, abandonar el tratamiento. Precaución en ancianos y en insuficiencia respiratoria (deprime el centro de la respiración).

Ocasionalmente, reacciones alérgicas cutáneas, estreñimiento, vértigos, naúseas, somnolencia. Alteraciones hematológicas (excepcionalmente): Agranulocitosis de origen inmunoalérgico, anemia aplásica y trombocitopenia.
