Depression, anxiety associated with depression.Adult Dosage
75 - 150mg daily in divided doses or as a single dose in the evening. May be increased up to 225mg daily in hospital setting.Elderly Dosage
75mg daily may be adequate.Contra Indications
Recent myocardial infarction, heart block, disorders of cardiac rhythm, severe liver disease, mania. Pregnancy. mania. Pregnancy.Special Precautions
Cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, lactation, glaucoma, patients with suicidal tendencies, prostatic hypertrophy, surgery. Withdraw gradually. Reduce doses for the elderly.Interactions
With or within 14 days of MAOIs. Barbiturates, alcohol, local anaesthetics containing adrenaline (epinephrine) or noradrenaline (norepinephrine), quinidine, antihypertensives, SSRIs, CNS depressants, anaesthetic drugs which affect cardiac conduction, methylphenidate.Adverse Reactions
Anticholinergic effects such as dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision and changes in accommodation, palpitations and tachycardia. Drowsiness, tremor, orthostatic hypotension, sweating, epileptiform seizures. Allergic skin reactions, jaundice and blood disorders (test blood regularly). Conduction defects and cardiac arrhythmias. Hepatitis (including altered liver function), inappropriate ADH secretion. Endocrine effects such as changes in libido and impotence. Some patients may switch over into mania and schizophrenic symptoms activated, especially in the elderly. Withdrawal symptoms.Drug Availability
