Drug Class Description

Thiazide diuretics (thiazides) / potassium supplements (K+ supplements).

Generic Name

Bendrofluazide [bendroflumethiazide], potassium chloride

Drug Description

Tablets.

Presentation

Tablets, bendrofluazide 2.5mg, potassium chloride 573mg.

Indications

Oedema of cardiac, hepatic or renal origin. Control of blood pressure in mild to moderate hypertension. (Prophylaxis against recurrent renal calcium stones.)

Adult Dosage

Oedema and hypertension: Initially, two to four tablets daily; maintenance dose, one to four tablets daily or on alternate days.

Centyl K should be taken in the morning to avoid nocturia. The tablets should be swallowed whole with at least 100mL water.

Child Dosage

Not recommended.

Contra Indications

Anuria, severe renal or hepatic failure, history of sensitivity to thiazides, hypercalcaemia. Centyl K should not be Centyl K should not be administered concurrently with lithium salts. Presence of obstructions in the digestive tract (eg, resulting from compression of the oesophagus due to dilation of the left atrium or from stenosis of the gut). Lactation.

Special Precautions

Renal or hepatic dysfunction. Monitor fluid and electrolyte levels in patients undergoing prolonged or intense diuresis. Non-specific bowel lesions characterised by stenosis and accompanied by ulceration have been associated with oral administration of tablets or capsules containing potassium salts; discontinue treatment immediately if symptoms and signs which might indicate ulceration or obstruction of the small bowel occur. Diabetes mellitus. Gout. Elderly. Acute pancreatitis and blood dyscrasias may occur rarely. Pregnancy.

Interactions

Hypoglycaemic agents, other hypotensive agents (eg, hydralazine, beta-blockers, ganglion blocking agents), NSAIDs.

Adverse Reactions

Depletion of fluid and electrolytes (symptoms include muscle pain or fatigue, thirst, gastrointestinal upset and oliguria). Impotence, hyperuricaemia, increased blood urea. Also, skin rashes with associated photosensitivity, necrotising vasculitis and aggravation of pre-existing myopia.
