Clotrimazole - genital infectionsDrug Description
Pessary or cream.Presentation
Vaginal tablet, clotrimazole 500mg. Cream, clotrimazole 1%.Indications
Cream: Treatment of skin infections due to dermatophytes (eg, trichophyton species), yeasts (eg, candida species), moulds and other fungi. These include ringworm (tinea) infections, athlete's foot, paronychia, pityriasis versicolor, erythrasma and intertrigo, as well as fungal nappy rash, candidal vaginitis and candidal balanitis. Pessary: Treatment of candidal vaginitis.Adult Dosage
Cream: apply to the affected area two or three times daily. Treat for at least two weeks for Candida infections. Pessary: One vaginal tablet inserted in the evening. If external symptoms (eg, discharge, itching) have not subsided completely within three days after termination of therapy, after termination of therapy, treatment should be continued only after consulting the attending doctor.
Child Dosage
Cream: As above. Pessary: under 16 years, only on doctor's directions.Contra Indications
Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole. Pessary: only to be used in children under 16 years on advice of the doctor; first trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy and lactation. If pessary is used during pregancy, use without an applicator.Interactions
Cream: None known. Pessary: clotrimazole reduces the efficacy of other drugs which are used to treat fungal diseases (amphotericin and other polyene antibiotics, eg, nystatin).
Adverse Reactions
