Drug Description

Tablets.

Presentation

Tablets, bendrofluazide 2.5 mg , 5 mg , Available from APS, Ashbourne (Neo-Bendromax R ), Cox, Goldshield (Neo-NaclexR , 5 mg only), Hillcross, Norton, Regent, Sovereign (AprinoxR , generic preparation also available).

Indications

Mild hypertension. Severe hypertension (in combination with other drugs). Mild to moderate other drugs). Mild to moderate heart failure where no pulmonary oedema is present.

Adult Dosage

Oedema, initially 5 - 10 mg every morning or on alternate days. Maintenance, 5 - 10 mg once or twice weekly. Hypertension, 2.5 - 5 mg once daily.

Child Dosage

Initially up to 400 microgram/kg daily reducing to 50 - 100 microgram/kg daily for maintenance.

Contra Indications

Severe renal failure. Sulphonamide sensitivity. Lactation.

Special Precautions

Hepatic or renal impairment, Addison's disease, hypercalcaemia, diabetes, gout, SLE. Monitor renal function and electrolytes. Elderly. Pregnancy.

Interactions

Lithium, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids, carbenoxolone, tubocurarine, NSAIDs, antidiabetic agents, alcohol, barbiturates, opioids, antihypertensives.

Adverse Reactions

Electrolyte and metabolic disturbance. Rash, photosensitivity, blood dyscrasias, impotence, pancreatitis.
